What is this course?
This course provides foundational education in prenatal massage therapy techniques, equipping therapists with comprehensive and current evidence-based knowledge about pregnancy and massage therapy. Students will gain an understanding of the anatomical and physiological changes a pregnant client's body undergoes through each trimester, as well as the benefits, indications, risks, and contraindications associated with prenatal massage. Additionally, the course covers essential oil safety for the prenatal population and identifies key acupressure points to be aware of.
The course includes demonstrations on bolstering, draping, and conducting a full prenatal massage session. Therapists will practice performing a complete prenatal massage and receive feedback from the instructor on body mechanics and client positioning to ensure proper technique and client safety.

What will I learn?
At the end of this class, students will be able to:
Understand the anatomical and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy.
Identify and dispel myths of pregnancy massage & clearly define the benefits, indications, risks, and contraindications of prenatal massage
Recognize symptoms of high-risk pregnancies
Identify the different types of essential oils that are indicated and contraindicated during pregnancy and understand how to apply them safely.
Understand the proper application of acupressure for pregnant women.
Discuss how to modify massage techniques for pregnant women.
Create an effective and safe prenatal treatment plan.
Perform a full body 50 minute prenatal massage on a healthy pregnant woman in the side lying and semi reclined position with proper draping and body mechanics.
Skills you will gain
Prenatal Positioning: Understand the most effective positions for pregnant clients that promote comfort and safety during bodywork sessions. Learn how to utilize supportive props and adapt your techniques to accommodate the changing body.
Anatomy Knowledge: Gain a thorough understanding of the anatomical changes that occur during pregnancy. This knowledge will enhance your ability to provide tailored bodywork while ensuring the well-being of both the client and the baby.
Common Complaints & Pathologies: Learn when certain conditions require a more collaborative approach with prenatal care providers and when massage therapy can be safely applied to address a number of common complaints that pregnant clients experience.
Sidelying and Supine Modifications: Effectively utilize therapeutic techniques for prenatal positions that adequately address clients areas of complaints. These skills carry over well into other client groups such as individuals who have undergone chest or other surgery that makes lying prone impossible, people who have extremely rounded shoulder or other structural issues (scoliosis, DDD, etc) who are more comfortable on their side, and anyone who would benefit from a more comforting position.
